Panhandle Faces Trooper Shortage
November 20, 2008
WHEELING — The statewide need for West Virginia State Police troopers is most serious in the Northern Panhandle, according to the Wheeling Detachment’s top officer.
The recent results of a legislative survey indicate a majority of State Police troopers believe there are not enough officers in the field throughout the Mountain State. Sgt. Scott Adams is one who believes there is a serious trooper shortage — and he said a remedy for the problem should first be sought in this area.

OK, maybe it's me, but I've been noticing a lot of things around the Ohio Valley that just don't make any sense. Time for a gripe session! 1. I spotted a brand new electronic billboard right behind the Sunoco at Aetna Street and Ohio 7. Great, another thing to distract drivers at one of the most dangerous intersections in the state! 2. The former site of Elm Middle School in Martins Ferry has been purchased by a local couple who have placed a No Trespassing sign on all that lovely green space that kids could be using to get some exercise. Why not let them play there while you decide what you're going to do with it? I understand we live in a litigious society, but it's really such a waste. 3. The holiday story time display at the Ohio Valley Mall until yesterday was situated so that as children sat facing the reader, they could see great big boobs falling out of push-up bras on the giant poster window display at Victoria's Secret. To the mall's credit, they changed the display yesterday. It is still near Vicky's, but the children at least will be facing Waldenbooks now. 4. The nicest playground in Martins Ferry is at the Jaycee Manor public housing apartments. Don't the homeowners in the city also deserve a nice place for their children to play? I would be interested in helping to organize a community build in Ferry (like they did in St. C) if anyone knows how to get it started! 5.

Playoffs Baby, Oh Yeah

Forgive my juvenile blog title, but there's nothing like high school playoff football to get my blood pumping. Yes, I know the Ohio playoffs are already in its third week, but while my colleagues at the Times Leader have been reaping the benefits, I've had to wait. But I wait no more. Yours truly will be making a trek south on Route 2 to New Martinsville to watch Magnolia take on Point Pleasant. I'm wondering what the Eagles will do for an encore after their impressive victory against Grafton. And of course, being a man of large (read: fat) stature, I'll be stopping at Quinet's beforehand. Since I've gotten to cover Magnolia a good bit this season, that's the game I most wanted to watch. Although, I have to admit, a large part of me wouldn't mind being at Harding Stadium to see River against Malvern. Honestly, who wouldn't want to watch the best defense in Division VI try to slow down the best offense in Division VI. Then I, as most Ohio Valley football fans probably will, will have my fingers crossed holding out hope for a Big Red vs. Martins Ferry state semifinal. The question is, where would it be held? There's obviously no field in between the two schools even remotely capable of holding the type of crowd this game would draw. I know the perfect solution, but there's a two-fold problem that comes along with it.

It's "Bye Bye, Blackberry" for the U.S. President

I always knew U.S. presidents weren't allowed to drive, and that Secret Service agents always accompanied them on those horse back rides (Reagan), or bicycle jaunts (G.W. Bush). But I never would have though they were prohibited from using e-mail or cellular phones. Apparently, no president has even had a computer on his Oval Office desk. Their assistants take care of all that technology stuff. The idea is that someone could hack into the president's computer or phone to learn top secret information. But it's also believed that the president should live in an isolated world -- free from all that extraneous information that isn't coming from his advisers. (Ah. . .hh h h hh h!!!!!!!!!!!!) This just might cause confusion for the president. It's such a horrible thought that the president is intentionally kept isolated, and away from the outstide world and influences that technology brings. President-elect Obama is already expressing concern about this, and doesn't appear to want to give up his Blackberry too easily, according to recent reports. Perhaps the greatest asset Obama brings to the White House is that he isn't a product of the Washington bubble. As we've come to know in recent months, Obama has seen the plight of single mothers, the effects of cancer, problems with health care benefits and what goes on in the homes of those without a job. He's also well acquainted with technology.

Steamed over rivals?

Barack Obama wants to name Hillary Clinton as his secretary of state. That has led some pundits to compare him to Abraham Lincoln, as described in the Doris Kearns Goodwin book "Team of Rivals." The book explained Lincoln's policy of forming his cabinet, which was to place on it many of his political rivals from the past. His secretary of state, William Seward, had been Lincoln's chief rival for the Republican nomination for president in 1860. Some have speculated that Lincoln wanted to get potential opponents for the 1864 election on his team, so that they wouldn't run against him that year. Lincoln claimed he simply wanted the best people. But there may be more parallels than have been mentioned. Seward thought he was the best man for the presidency, even after Lincoln won. And when Seward took office as secretary of state, he attempted to manipulate Lincoln, at least for a few weeks. That came to a quick end when Lincoln let him know, in writing, who was boss. Could the same thing happen during an Obama presidency? Already, Obama's staff people are exasperated at Clinton because they are having trouble getting financial information on Bill Clinton's foreign investments. That information is important because, depending on the investments, they could be seen as a conflict of interest for Hillary Clinton as secretary of state.

Get Out and See The Nailers

You hear people all the time say stuff like "if the team is winning, the fans will come.' There hasn't been much winning the last couple seasons by the home team at WesBanco Arena. That's starting to change as Coach Greg Puhalski recruited a team comprised solely of his type of players. The result is a 5-0-0-1 record and and ECHL-high 11 points heading into tonight's North Division showdown with arch-rival Johnstown at the Arena. The problem is, hardly anyone is there to see this offensively charged team. You can put that blame directly on the ECHL, who during the offseason hired the same firm to work out its schedule as the NBA uses. The result is six home games in October, something that's never going to work around here. This is high school football country and it will be until the season is finished. Let's hope the Nailers are still rolling when that time comes. I don't understand it, the fans I've talked to do understand it, and the members of the team's front office I've spoken with don't understand it. Tonight should be a good gauge in the interest, however. WVU, West Liberty and Bethany played this afternoon and Ohio State is off this week. The only high school game tonight features Buckeye Local and Licking Valley in Newark. This is a team you can get behind, so get out to the games!

Bus, STOP

So, here I am sitting on U.S. 40 at a red light at the intersection of Mt. de Chantal Road and National Road one day last week, and I can tell the light is about to turn green. I'm assuming that means the light for the other traffic, the traffic coming from Mt. de Chantal Road, will turn red. I'm also assuming that the big, yellow school bus will stop. Except that I didn't assume that because I could see it coming ... and it didn't look like it had given stopping even a passing thought. Should I call 911? I asked myself. Just a couple of seconds after my light turned green for me to proceed (you know, that same time the school bus went through the red light), I noticed a police car approaching. I wasn't quite sure he had seen the school bus — which I might add, thankfully, had no children aboard. I decided to memorize the school bus number, and then deal with it when I arrived at work. A co-worker suggested I call the school board instead of the police. Mrs. John connected me with Gary Kestner, the transportation director. He asked me if I had the bus number, which I gave to him. And then he said that the driver of that bus was in his office at that moment, reporting the incident. I was pleased to hear that. I think it's admirable that the bus driver turned himself in. But I was still a bit unnerved that the bus traveled through that red light.

Be careful

Did you read the brief police report about two middle school boys being beaten by two older teens on Edgington Lane over the weekend? This was not just a playground scuffle. The younger boys were badly beaten by the older guys who asked the younger boys if they had any drugs or money. When the younger boys said they had neither, they were beaten up. One of the boys will be having plastic surgery to repair his injuries. The other boy's injuries required stitches and may have been knocked out during the attack. One boy attends St. Michael's and the other goes to Triadelphia Middle School. These are CHILDREN. They were attacked in an area well-traveled on a Friday evening. I walk the same area, as do many people even in the evening, because it has always been safe. I hope that there are witnesses that can identify these creeps and can send them to jail. If you hear anything, let the cops know or give me a call here at the newspaper 233-0100, ext. 240. If we don't stand up to bullies how can our kids?
